Certified Web Design Frequently Asked Questions
Many of you have pressing questions about WMI's Certified Web Design program. What it entails, where it came from, where it's going to and what can happen to you if you take it. Here are answers to our more popular questions about the program. If you haven't found the answer to your question here, please feel free to contact us for more information.
Where did the course originate?
Our CWD course originated right here at Web Masters Ink. We service high-end corporate accounts and have ecouraged them to hire and maintain their own staff for maintenance. Even after rigorous interview procedures, hires would modify our pages and inadvertently alter embedded programming, decreasing the value of the site or (in some cases) rendering it inoperable. Our clients desired an alternative to Novell's course that would ensure them that their employees would have the skills necessary to take over the responsibility of the site. Our CWD course was born.
Is your course accredited?
We are not accredited by any source. This course is a combination of Novell's course and skills that have come from working in the commercial Web site design industry for many years. The course grows and changes as new technologies are introduced and tried and true solutions are discovered for our clients. Think of it of more of a technical college course, rather than acedemic college course. We keep all records of students' progress on file and offer referral services to our graduates.
How long does the course take?
The course is divided into six sections. The minumum amount of time that a student can take to pass all six sections, submit their class project and take the final exam is six weeks. Students are encouraged to work on each section for as long as they need to get a firm grasp of the material. Some students progress at a slower pace than others and a student may take a maximum of one year to complete the course material.
Do I have an instructor or am I on my own?
Each student is assigned a mentor. Each mentor has completed the course and is currently working in the professional Web site design industry to assure that they are up on any current changes in the Internet and how it affects professional Web site design. Students may contact their mentors at any time to assist them along the way by email, FAX, chatroom, ICQ, snail mail or telephone, etc... whatever it takes to assure the student's success.
How much does the course cost and how do you accept payment?
The student must obtain the textbook independently which retails for US$19.99. Above that, the total cost of the course is US$1310. There are payment options: You may pay as you go, one section at a time. There is a pre-payment special that students may take advantage of if they pre-pay for all six sections that will result in savings of US$410. We accept personal checks, money orders, cashier's cheques, Visa, MasterCard and American Express.
Is the Certified Web Design Course open to anyone?
Prior to our offering our course to the public, you could only participate via referral or the potential student had to be an employee of one of our clients. Enrollment is now open to anyone. We feel as though we are doing our part to try to make the Internet a better place. The World Wide Web is in desperate need of more professional Web site designers.
What equipment, software or prior knowledge do I need to take the course?
The minimum requirements are a computer with access to the internet, an e-mail address, an Internet browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer, Opera or WebTV), a text and/or HTML editor or suite. Other programs are made available on a trial basis throughout the course. Our course is not software driven and there is never any attempt to push software on anyone. Students are invited to try a variety of software and select the software that best suits each student. No prior experience is necessary. Some typing skills and experience surfing the Internet will be helpful.
Is your course available outside the USA?
Since we are teaching the course via the Internet, it matters not which country you are in as long as you have a connection to the internet and have a reasonable command of the English language. At this time our course is only available in English, we have plans of bringing on other languages as they become available.
Do you offer placement services to graduates?
We do not have placement services, per se, but have been able to refer graduates to employment arrangements with our clients and will be developing a system to refer our graduates to other jobs as they become available.
Do you have scholarships available for students?
We do have a program for students who are already working as Web Designers who are looking for certification. There are programs available for those in retraining programs through State or Federal agencies. Low-income students may also apply for financial aid. Interested parties should
